I somehow missed this news from almost a month ago. AllAfrica.com reported on President Jacob Zuma committing South Africa to investment in renewable energy.
Zuma said planned investments in renewable energy will go ahead. "Renewable energy forms an important part of the energy mix, which includes electricity from gas, nuclear, hydro, wind, solar and coal," he said.Renewable energy of course goes hand in hand with electric vehicles. If an electric vehicle is being charged with electricity generated in a coal burning power station, then it is still adding Co2 to the atmosphere. If an electric car is being charged with electricity generated by solar, wind or other renewable forms of electricity than there are truly zero carbon emissions.
Of course just because the electricity used to charge an electric vehicle is being generated using fossil fuels is no reason not to have one. There are still of course many other benefits to owning an electric car; it still costs a lot less to power an EV, less maintenance is required, they're quieter and they are not emitting toxic fumes in the vicinity of other road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists. See here for a list of 10 benefits to owning an electric car.
